Gainesville State School

Gainesville State School is a facility of the Texas Youth Commission located two miles east of Gainesville, a town of approximately 15,000. Gainesville is 75 miles north of Dallas on Interstate 35. It is a fenced, maximum-security facility.

Gainesville State School officially opened its doors in September of 1916 as the Texas Girl's Training School with its initial enrollment of eighteen girls. The school became coed in 1974, and then became an exclusively male facility in 1988.

Some youth may participate in specialized treatment services. Youth are given high school credit for classes they pass and may obtain a high school diploma or GED. There are also vocational training classes in welding, manufacturing systems, and horticulture.
