Corsicana Residential Treatment Center

Corsicana Residential Treatment Center (CRTC) is a high-security, specialty facility operated by TYC for adjudicated youth whom evidence mental illness or serious emotional disturbance.

These youth require treatment for the stabilization of their emotional disorders before they can begin to be held accountable for their delinquent conduct.

History

The Corsicana Residential Treatment Center sits on a 351-acre site placed into service in 1889 as the Corsicana State Orphans Home. The State Orphans Home provided housing and educational services for children and adolescents who had lost their families or whose families could no longer care for them.

The Home reached a peak population of 890 children in 1932-33 during a period of severe economic depression throughout the United States. The youth who lived in the orphans home contributed to their upkeep by sewing their own clothes, milking the home's cattle herd, and growing vegetables. As economic prosperity resumed, the number of children in the home slowly decreased.
