Parents Anonymous
of Texas, Inc.
This is a summary of
Parents Anonymous of Texas, Inc., a non-profit organization committed
to preventing child maltreatment through the implementation of results-oriented,
volunteer-driven programs offered at no cost to those served. The program
is currently located in 27 Texas communities, with 13 additional sites
in varying stages of new development or on a waiting list to start development.
Services Provided
Parents Anonymous provides
direct services through:
- Peer-led, professionally-facilitated,
mutual-help groups for anyone affected by child abuse. Parents attend
a support group modeled after other self-help programs. Children attend
a structured program that supports their learning process in areas of
self-esteem, family roles and behavior changes.
- Training programs.
Local and national experts are used as consultants and reviewers to
assist staff.
- Family Development
Program, a combination of self help and therapy to provide treatment
for victims of child sexual abuse.
- Parent Education
-- funded by foundations and local sites. The PA Nurturing Program provides
parents and children a structured plan to learn how to interact appropriately
and effectively.
- Texas Parent HEARTline
-- funded by private donation. A 24-hour crisis line answered by volunteers
trained to handle crises involving child abuse, referrals, and identifying
community resources.
- PAPPA -- funded
by the Governor's Office, Criminal Justice Division. The program operates
at 33 Texas prisons to stop child abuse, help heal the breakdown of
the family unit, and prevent the reoccurence of child maltreatment,
including child sexual abuse.
- TEENS -- funded
by private donations. PA is working with American Institute for Learning,
Lifeway and the juvenile court system to provide a teen program that
addresses all issues specifically for dropouts, chemically dependent
and gang adolescents.
- Quarterly workshops
-- partially funded by DPRS/Governor's Office, and private contributions.
Volunteers, local staff, families and other agencies attend workshops
for problem solving, personal development, program development and administrative
issues accredited by The University of Texas.
- Roundhouse Conference
on Child Abuse -- funded by private donations. National and local experts
in the field of child abuse present workshops for professional and lay
service providers, volunteers and program participants.
- Community Outreach
-- corporate and foundation support. A major advertising campaign, a
quarterly newsletter distributed statewide, community television reports,
radio spots and programs. Two successful annual benefits have provided
community awareness and additional funding.
