Rescue Youth Programs
(Families Under Urban & Social Attack, Inc.)
Families
Under Urban & Social Attack, Inc. (FUUSA) is a Texas chartered, non-profit
corporation that provides violence prevention and alcohol and drug prevention/intervention
services for adults and at-risk youth in Houstons Third Ward and
Acres Home Area.
Rescue Mentor
Program
The RESCUE
Mentor program matches youth with positive adult role models in the community.
The program serves youth between the ages of 8 to 17 and is designed to
assist youth in the following areas:
- Strengthen self-esteem
- Improve planning
skills
- Foster interpersonal
skills
- Improve academic
achievements
- Improve family
relationships
This after-school
program is available to youth during the academic year, Monday through
Friday. Youth are transported from school to an environment that is safe,
secure, nurturing, and challenging. An eight-week summer program is also
conducted Monday through Friday.
The Mentoring
Program Coordinator and/or staff supervise all activities. The goal is
to reinforce the students confidence and protective skills to help
them bounce back from adversity and avoid involvement in negative behavior.
Community Service Projects such as community clean ups, assisting food
banks, organizing food drives, delivering meals to elderly/disabled, doing
chores for disabled, and hospital visitation, etc. are an integral part
of the Mentor program.
Mentors
must be 21 years of age or older, have a genuine interest and concern
for youth and be willing to commit at least one year to supervised involvement
with a youth mentee. Mentors must be drug free and have no history of
criminal or child abuse involvement. A criminal and child abuse background
check is completed on all mentor applicants.
Six hours
of training is given prior to assuming mentor responsibilities and monthly
support sessions are provided thereafter.
Juvenile Delinquency
Program
The RESCUE
Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Program is designed to reduce the incidence
of juvenile delinquent activities among at-risk youth by providing primary
prevention strategies. Services are provided in the following areas:
- substance abuse
- premature sexual
behavior prevention
- violence prevention
- cultural enrichment/recreational
activities
- parent workshops
- Adolescent Outpatient
Treatment Program
This
program is designed to assist youth participants in altering their behavior
and achieve maximum potential through counseling (individual/group), and
support groups such as educational and skills enhancement, case management
and community resource referral.
Violence Prevention
Program
The RESCUE
Violence Prevention Program is a 10-week course designed to reduce the
incidence among youth (both male and female). Participants learn to resolve
conflicts using nonviolence techniques through social environmental and
competence skills training components.
Funding
FUUSA
is funded by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (TCADA), The
Junior League of Houston, Child Care Council, Childrens Fund, Houston
Endowment, Inc., The Powell Foundation, City of Houston, Office of the
Governor, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development.
