Council Reports (continued)

GIDDINGS
The Giddings Community Advisory Council has for the most part, adhered to the September 2002 Budget and Fundraising plan. The supplemental income from participation in the Live Stock Show, fell well short of the estimate but the Christmas Letter generated $700 to help make up the difference. We have been able to keep up with the request for Parent Lodging and Transportation and are in budget thus far this year. The Council set aside $4000 for this need this year.

The Council continues to meet the need of the Academic School by providing hundreds of dollars in Student Incentives (Accelerated Reader Program, GED and Vocational Students of the Month) and participation in Advanced Religious Studies, (Master Life Bible Studies). A High School graduation Reception was sponsored by the Council with a $200 cake serving as the refreshment center piece and each graduate was given 35 mm photographs of both individual and family.

In December, the Council provided special funding at a cost of $895 to allow our students to experience the Rock Solid Character program. Universal principles of respect, responsibility, perseverance, honesty, caring, trustworthiness, and courage are taught and reinforced through an experiential model-real rock climb on the first and only portable, freestanding 24-foot Texas spire. The Council also set aside $1200 for Christmas gifts and candy.

On April 29, 2003, Hamilton State School Community Advisory Council generously donated $4,272.93 to be used for the tattoo removal program at Giddings and $1406.93 designated to Giddings State School Ministry Funds. These gifts are further examples of the many good and decent things the Hamilton Council has been doing for TYC kids over the few short years of their existence. They will be sorely missed.

The Giddings Council meets each second Tuesday of the month at 12 Noon, in the Administration Conference Room at Giddings State School.

HAMILTON

The Hamilton State School Community Advisory Council was organized in November of 1999. It was composed of 15 dedicated community members. The Hamilton council members worked very diligently throughout their tenure for the benefit of the Hamilton students. They committed countless hours to numerous fund raising projects as well as community service projects. They also assisted in Christmas parties and other holiday events. On March 27, 2003 this magnificent group of people had to make a difficult decision and that was to dissolve their organization due to the closure of the J. W. Hamilton State School. This is a decision that was decided by the majority of the members of the council.

"On behalf of Hamilton State School I would like to thank the Hamilton State School Community Advisory Council for all the care, concern, and commitment they have given to the youth at Hamilton State School."

                                                                       — Demetris McDaniel, Community Relations Coordinator

HOUSTON
The Community Volunteer Youth Council is a chartered non-profit advisory council for the local Texas Youth Commission (TYC) program. The Council is dedicated to providing positive role models, education, recreational, employment and financial resources to Houston Area youth under the jurisdiction of TYC
This year saw the passing of two Houston Council members, former president of the Statewide Resource Council and the Houston Council Eva Burford in September 2002 and former Council member Diana Harris April 2003. Council plans to develop a scholarship in Eva's memory for an Eastern Service Area TYC Youth.

Thanksgiving 2002 the council helped secure turkeys to go into the holiday food boxes that were distributed to 10 TYC needy families. In December the Council sponsored a baby shower for a student with limited resources who is participating in the Parents As Teachers Program and doing well.

Houston Volunteer, Steven Holloway was nominated and chosen to receive the 2003 Governor's Adult Volunteer Award. Steve received the award at a reception hosted by the Texas Commission on Volunteerism on May 1st 2003.

The Annual Educational Banquet hosted by the Council and HE Butts Inc. to recognize TYC Parole and Contract youth who have exhibited academic success in a school, vocational or trade school program. The event will be held on May 8, 2003. This year more than 35 students will be recognized.

The year was spent planning and assisting the State Resource Council with hosting the 2003 statewide volunteer conference in Houston May 30th to June 1 2003. We are very excited and hope all the conference attendees have a great time.

MARLIN
The Falls County Community Council for Youth at Risk has been very busy during the past six months. Fund-raising projects included retractable badge holders, Krispy Kreme donut sale that netted $750.00, Direct Appeal letters at Christmas, donations from staff as Memorials, and a $500.00 donation from Sam's Club. All of the fund-raisers have proven to be very successful.

The Council has been involved in other projects such as providing 450 goodie filled stockings for the kids at Christmas and delivering them to the youth; greeting cards for Mothers Day and Fathers Day were purchased from the Prison Card Ministry. Our youth use these cards during their letter writing time and are able to send them to their families. They collected books for our facility library and have provided funds several times to purchase food for reward and holiday parties.

They sponsored the Bill Glass Day of Champions and provided refreshments for over 50 volunteers. The council participates in Teen Read Week and recently made a donation to a fellow council to assist with the purchase of a tattoo removal machine. The council has assisted a couple of families to visit youth here in Marlin.

The Council has been involved in special events for staff, youth, and visitors at MOAU. Staff and youth appreciation are very important to the Council. The Council underwrote the local 2002 Volunteer Appreciation Banquet and will be doing the same this year.

The council always attends the SVRC meetings in Austin and two members will attend the State Conference and will be supporting the Silent auction that Community Relations Coordinator Tanya Rosas of MOAU will be in charge of. The biggest accomplishment has been to become Incorporated Council, which included rewriting their by-laws, and they voted to change the council name. The council now is a 501(c) (3) organization. The Council continues to recruit new members. We have 3 new members that replaced previous members that left the council due to illness or relocation for a total of 20 members. They are striving to get a better mix of the community in our Council. Our Council currently has a balance of $2,163.00 in the bank.

The Council meets the second Thursday of every month, except for July and December from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the MOAU conference room.
